Admin • Mar 14, 2022

Vacation is a time of rest, but it can also be a time of inspiration and learning. If you're looking to educate or enrich yourself on your visit to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, read on for our top museum recommendations.

1. Walter Anderson Museum of Art (WAMA)

Located in Ocean Springs, this museum exhibits the work of coastal painter Walter Anderson and other artists of a similar kind. Anderson's paintings focus on the natural world, including many examples of native Mississippi wildlife.

The Walter Anderson Museum of Art hosts both permanent collections and changing exhibitions, so every visit is unique. Grab a ticket on their website ahead of time or book a guided tour to get the most of your trip.

2. Lynn Meadows Discovery Center (LMDC)

If you're looking to entertain your children during your vacation, look no further than the Lynn Meadows Discovery Center. The LMDC includes indoor and outdoor activities, including art classes, train rides, history and science exhibits, and multiple play areas. It even offers special accommodations for children with sensory processing disorders like autism, so your child can be safe and comfortable.

The LMDC offers many special events year-round, so be sure to check their calendar to see what's happening before your visit. The Discovery Center promises an educational and fun experience, and it's conveniently located nearby in Gulfport.

3. Infinity Science Center

For an exciting full-day adventure, head over to the Infinity Science Center in Pearlington. It's the official visitor center for NASA's Stennis Space Center. This location is perfect for any space lovers, with a space gallery and the real Apollo 4 Capsule.

The Infinity Space Center also includes a carnivorous plant conservatory, a 3D immersive theater, and butterfly gardens. The Center recommends at least two and a half to three hours per visit, with wonder and discoveries to fill every minute.

4. Coastal Mississippi Mardi Gras Museum

Even if you're not here for Mardi Gras, you can still get a taste of the event at the Coastal Mississippi Mardi Gras Museum in Biloxi. The museum showcases ornate costumes alongside plaques, which give some of the 300-year history of Mardi Gras.

With a movie room and knowledgeable hosts, this small but intimate museum guarantees a fun and informative visit to Biloxi. Consider dropping by some of the surrounding restaurants or shops to make a full-day trip.

5. Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum

The Maritime and Seafood Industry Museum grants visitors an in-depth look at Biloxi's history as a coastal city. This museum displays a commercial fishing gallery and environmental gallery, as well as the Joe Morgan Art Exhibit Gallery.

If you want to partake in Biloxi's history yourself, you can also rent a schooner ahead of time for a large group. Bring food and refreshments on board for a relaxing cruise on the water.

6. Ohr-O'Keefe Museum of Art

This Biloxi museum celebrates the life of late 19th-century potter George Ohr, who called himself the "Mad Potter of Biloxi." Ohr's pottery features bright colors and bizarre but beautiful designs. The museum houses many similar artists alongside Ohr's work.

In addition to this vibrant gallery, the Ohr-O'Keefe Museum offers guided tours and activities, including sculpting sessions in their on-site ceramics studio. Projects can be shipped at an additional cost, so you don't have to worry about keeping your creation safe on the way home.
